Richardson Highway follows near Ptarmigan Creek through much of it's winding through Thompson Pass.
Located 18 miles east of Valdez, Ptarmigan Creek begins in to the south of Loveland Peak, Thompson Pass, it forms Worthington Lake and flows NE past Worthington Glacier, through Thompson Pass, to joinTsina River at what was once Ptarmigan, in the Chugach Mountains.
Small portions of Ptarmigan Creek could be considered navigable from the DOT Station for about a mile. However soon after passing under School Bus the creek runs through a small canyon and then again shortly after passing under Snatch.
Name reported in 1900 by F.C. Schrader, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). It's not too difficult to find Ptarmigan in the vicinity of the creek, so likely it was named for the abundance of ptarmigan.
