The easiest way to access the Tonsina is via a helicopter from Valdez. Or in winter Tok Air Service flies out of Thompson Pass and Valdez and can land on the Tonsina.
However the most popular way to access the Tonsina is riding a snowmachine (snowmobile) up the Tsina River on to the Tsina Glacier and up over the first fork immediately to the north (right).
heads at 611745N1455830W, trends E to its terminus (1951) at head of Tonsina River, 25 mi. NE of Valdez, Chugach Mts.
The Tonsina Glaicer is a easy to access glacier located just outside of Valdez, a little ways back from Thompson Pass. It’s a good gentle sloping glacier for traveling on and has a few good places to setup for a glacier ski camp.
