HistoryThis is a contracted form of the Tlingit Indian name "dokhaku," formed by the words "dok" meaning "cottonwood" and "haku" meaning "point of land." The Indian name is also sometimes given as "doq xaku." The shortened form of the name was given by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in 1922.
