Getting There
From Valdez drive about 5 miles out Richardson Highway. Take a right on Dayville Road, after passing Solomon Gulch at the next turn is a parking area at Allison Point, along with some camping places. The beginning of the trail has a map and sign, is the only road (gated) leading up the hill.

About
Just across from Valdez the John Hunter Memorial Trail (formerly Solomon Gulch Trail) begins down near Port Valdez and follows an access road up through coastal spruce forest to the Alyeska Pipeline. Then heads east up the pipeline in one long hill. The back side of the hill is a short steep descent. At this point the trail is right above Solomon Gulch. The pipeline and trail pass under water pipe from the reservoir dam to the hydro plant. Immediately after the trail follows the road left continuing up hill until you reach the Solomon Lake Dam.

Once reaching the Solomon Gulch creek the trail passes by a stream two more times, one which has a deep hole for swimming should one find themselves hiking the trail on a hot day.
