History

Local descriptive name published in 1901 Coast Pilot (p. 196). Originally named in 1833 by the Russian navigator Ensign Vasiliev for an early Russian explorer Gerasim Izamilov; published in 1848 as "Os(trov) Samoylov," or "Samoylov Island" on Russian Hydrographic Dept. Chart 1397.
