HistoryNamed by the Russians; published in 1948 on Russian Hydrographic Chart 1397 as "Proliv Fortuny" meaning "Fortuny Strait." "The Spanish schooner Fortuna, * * * was found ashore here and taken by the Russian American Company's vessels as a prize in 1819. The name has doubtless come from this circumstance"(Baker, 1906, p. 262).
