HistoryName suggested by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in 1928, derived from Soapstone Point. Its original well-established local name was Indian Cove because of a Tlingit Indian village located there. The change in the name was because of possible confusion with Inian Cove located to the NE. The variant name Miliak is a transliteration of a Russian word meaning "soapstone."
