HistoryNamed by Captain George Vancouver, Royal Navy (RN), in 1794 for Wimbledon, one of the seats of the Spencer family in England (Wagner, 1937, p. 422). Some charts erroneously call it "Winbledon." Wimbledon is a suburb of London and is now the headquarters of tennis in England.
