Named for Captain Melville C. Erskine of the Alaska Commercial Company by U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (USBF) in 1888. Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 14), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), referred to it as "Zal(iv) Kikukalen" or "Kikukalen Bay." Father Veniaminov (1840, v. 1, p. 162) called it "Kikukalya."
