About

Extends SE from 35 mi SE of Haines Junction, Yukon, to Fraser River E of Vancouver, British Columbia; it forms the mainland portion of SE Alaska between Skagway and Portland Canal.

History

In 1870, Dall (p. 286) wrote: "The Coast or St. Elias Range contains the highest peaks and most of the volcanoes. It extends along the whole northwest coast from California to the peninsula of Alaska." The name "Coast Mountains" was standardized and the mountains were defined as above by the Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names (CPCGN) in 1902. See Coast Range.
