HistoryNamed by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in 1908 for Port Chatham. The island was named "El Sombrero", meaning "the hat," on an unpublished Spanish map by Don Ignacio Arteaga, Don Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, and Francisco Antonio Maurelle in 1779.
