Aleut name reported by P. K. Krenitzin and M. Levashev in 1768 (Coxe, 1787, p. 205) and spelled Acootan by Cook (1785, v. 2, p. 425), Royal Navy (RN). This name may be from the Aleut word "hakuta" which, according to R. H. Geoghegan, means "I made a mistake."
