History of Sarana Bay

Name reported in 1830 by Father Ioann Veniaminov as "Saranna Bukhta," i.e. "Saranna Bay." It was named "Vulcan Cove" in 1888 by U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (USBF) "because the fire of Vulcan is much in evidence on this island." U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) reported "Sarana Bay" as the local usage in 1935. "Sarana is the Russian name for the Kamchatkan lily." Early U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) charts applied the name to the large bay west of Battery Point. However, Father Veniaminov (1840, v. 1, p. 192-194) described it as the largest bay on Akutan Island with Cape Kayanak (Battery Point) on its right bank.
