Named in 1887 by Lieutenant Commander C. M. Thomas, U.S. Navy (USN), for Grover Cleveland, 1837-1908, then President of the United States; published by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in the 1891 Coast Pilot (p. 145).
