HistoryNamed by Captain George Vancouver, Royal Navy (RN), in 1794 after its discovery by Lieutenant Joseph Whidbey on August 4, 1794, for George Walpole, Earl of Oxford, England (Wagner, 1937, p. 421). This name was published in 1848 as "Mys Valpol," or "Valpol Cape," by the Russian Hydrographic Dept. on Chart 1396.
