on SW coast of Hinchinbrook I., 30 mi. SW of Cordova; Chugach Mts. 10 miles long.

History

named by Captain Portlock (1789, p. 244) in July 1787, presumedly for John Cadman Etches, who with "other traders entered into a commercial partenship, under the title of The King George's Sound Company, for carrying a fur trade from the western coast of America to China (1789, p. 4)." stated that the port was named for "John and Camden Etches and Co., of London, early fur traders of the Northwest coast." George Dixon, Royal Navy (RN), who accompanied Portlock on the voyage, called it "Port Rose." for this feature, referring to it as "Zaliv Nuchek" on their Hydrop. Dept. Chart 1378, dated 1847. de Santiago," July 23, 1779, by Don Ignacio Arteaga as a novena was prepared to celebrate the saint's day on July 25.
