HistoryNamed by Davidson (1869, p. 153), U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), while doing survey work along the south Alaska coast. Named for James Johnstone, Master of the H.M.S. Chatham, one of the vessels in Captain George Vancouver's expeditions to the region at the end of the 18th century. The point of land was earlier called "Cabo Frio," meaning "cold cape" in Spanish, by Jose Canizares on July 22, 1779 (Wagner, 1937, p. 456).
