HistoryFormer Eskimo village or camp reported in 1878-79 as "Shevenagamute" by E. W. Nelson, U.S. Signal Service. This spelling was shown on the 1880 Census map, but published "Shovenagamute," population 58, in Petroff's text (1884, p. 17). The 1890 Census lists "Shovenagamiut," population 62.
