HistoryThe Mountaineering Club of Alaska reported that is is a local name given by Molly Gilmore, lifeling resident of the McCarthy area, who at age 17, named the mountain for the abundance of fireweed which grew on the mountain following forest fires in the 1920's. Though the most common and well known flower in Alaska, it is commemorated on no other Alaskan Mountain.
