Kodiak Island
718 ft (218.85 m)
between Uganik and Vickoda Bays, on N coast of Kodiak I.
HistoryNative name reported in 1805 by Lisianski (1814, p. 169) as "Oohanick Island." Baker (1906, p. 647) wrote a transliteration of the Russian "O(strov) Uganik," or "Uganik Island," published by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 23). The U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) erroneously transliterated Captain Tebenkov's spelling as "Uganuk" and U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (USBF) did the same in 1888.
