History

Local name reported in 1872 by W. H. Dall, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS). It may be the "Kunaiugiuk Island" of Father Veniaminov (1840, v.1, p. 255), which is described as "long with two hills," or "Kangaiulouk," as published by Captain Lutke (1836, p.267).
