History of Big Koniuji Island

Aleut name "Kiuniuiu Tanani" or "Kunujutanany," meaning "big-crested auk," published by Sarichev, (1802, v. 2, p. 31). The Russians translated this name to "O(strov) Bolshoi Koniuzhi," from "Koniuzhka," meaning "the crested auk," published by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 24). "Big Koniushi Island" was shown on several U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) charts in 1872.
