HistoryShown as a separate island given the Russian-Aleut name "(strov) Kungiugan" by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 24), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN). The Russian-French form, "Kiganghyne Ile, "was used by Captain Lutke (1836, p. 267), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), for one of the Shumagin Is., not otherwise identified. "Kungiugan" is described as part of Big Koniuji Island in the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) 1947 Coast Pilot (p. 312).
