History

Named "Spasskaia Island" in 1869 by Commander R. W. Meade, U.S. Navy (USN), on Hydrographic Chart 225 after the bay (U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1883, p. 193). The spelling was modified by Board on Geographic Names (BGN) to conform with the anglicized pronunciation. See Spasski Bay.
