History of Hoonah Sound

Name derived from te Huna, a subtribe of the Tlingit Indians. The name was published as "Hooniah" or "Hoonah Sound" by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in the 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 164). It is reported that the Sitka Indians call it "Shekak."
