Descriptive name given in 1869 by Commander R. W. Meade, U.S. Navy (USN), published by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in the 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 174) with this note: "In SE Alaska all points are woody, and about one-third of them have been named so, to the great confusion of hydrographers."
