Named in 1794 by Captain George Vancouver, Royal Navy (RN), for Samuel Hood, 1724-1816, First Viscount and an English admiral. The point was discovered by Lieutenant Joseph Whilbey, Royal Navy (RN), of Captain Vancouver's party about July 21, 1794 (Wagner, 1937, p. 407).
