HistoryNamed in 1869 by Commander R. W. Meade, U.S. Navy (USN). He gave the name at the time only to Pavlof Harbor, but now it applies to the whole inlet (U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1891, p. 163). It was called "Novaya Gavan," meaning "new harbor" by Captain Lieutenant M. N. Vasiliev Imperial Russian Navy (IRN); published as such in 1848 on Russian Hydrographic Dept. Chart 1396.
