On the NE shore of the Gulf of Alaska, at the mouth of the Alsek River, 48 mi SE of Yakutat, Malaspina Coastal Plain. 16 miles wide.
HistoryNamed in 1869 by G. Davidson, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), because it appeared to be a shallow lagoon fed by silt laden glacial streams. In 1778 Captain James Cook (1785, v. 28, p. 347), Royal Navy (RN), named it "Beering's Bay" as he thought that Bering anchored here in 1741.
