History

Aleut name published as "Zaliv Chiniatskiy" or "Chiniat Bay" by Sarichev (1826, map 16). Baker (1906, p. 179) wrote, "* * * Chiniak is Aleut for a rocky, impassable, wretched sea." According to R. H. Geoghegan, "the name comes from the Aleut 'Chingaq,' which I do not interpret as a rocky, impassable, wretched sea."
