In Denali National Park, at the head of Traleika Glacier, on the E slope of South Peak of Denali, Alaska Range

History

Named in 1955 by Bradford Washburn for Elton S. Thayer, a National Park Service ranger who was the first to cross this basin while climbling South Peak in May 1954 and who lost his life in the descent.
