Get to Juneau first. Once in Juneau, you can launch a boat at Auke Bay, or boat or kayak from Amalga Harbor. Shelter Island is up along the west side of Favorite Channel.

Shelter Island is bordered by Favorite Channel to the east and Saginaw Channel on it's west coast. It's mostly comprised of spruce and hemlock forest with some Alaska yellow cedar, has one lake (Shelter Lake), several ponds, and a distinct point on its northern end topping out at 1,170 feet. Sitka black-tail deer can be found in the forest on the island.
Camping and hunting are permitted on the island. It host three Alaska State Parks Public Use Cabins. Salamander PUC, a 12X16 ft cabin, just off Halibut Cove on the northeastern corner of the island. You're suppose to be able to reserve the cabin through the state parks website, but it's not straight forward. The cabin is new and offers good views.
The island also has a few lodges for more catered stays.
