History

Named in 1893 by US@C&GS for Lieutenant Commander Henry Buckingham Mansfield, U.S. Navy (USN), 1846-1918. As commander of the US@C&GS streamer Patterson, he made coast and hydrographic surveys of Alaska waters from 1889 to 1891.
