Named in 1901 by J. J. Gilbert, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS). seen on that day (Holy Cross Day) so marked in our calendar" (1785, v. 2, p. 345-346). The name was published by the Russians (Tebenkov, 1852, map 8) as "Mys Kresta" meaning "Cape Cross."
