History of Point Lay

The Inuit name (Kali) for this village means "mount," which refers to the village's location on an elevated area. Believed to be the remains of the village of the so-called Kukpowruk people. Formerly situated on a barrier island to the west of Kasegaluk Lagoon, but relocated to the mainland, near the mouth of the Kokolik River, during the 1970's.
