Travel is generally extremely difficult due to deep mud bogs and tussocks. Drainage is poor and conditions are worsened after rain and heavy use. Conditions improve beyond Tanada Lake.
Not recommended for hikers, however, some hikers do use this trail to access Sheep Lake and Grizzly Lake up past Tanada Lake. Visit the Tanada Lake to learn more about what's to do there. Poor trail conditions make this a difficult hike. Hikers generally allow 5 to 7 days for this trip. The recreational ORV trail ends at the confluence of Goat Creek and Pass Creek, which marks the Wilderness Preserve Boundary.
From the Glenn Highway south of Tok and north of Glennallen take the turn east off the highway to Slana. The trailhead is at milepost 24 Nabesna Road.
Last we checked Tanada Lake Trail is closed to Recreational ORV (Off-Road Vehicle) use. When traveling in the park ORV permits are required for all recreational users. To obtain a permit, apply in person at the Slana Ranger Station (907) 822-7401 or Park Headquarters (907) 822-7250.
