HistoryEskimo name reported in 1950 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) meaning "to ascend," (meokiak), referring to step-like ponds along its course. The name was first recorded as "Mayoria" by Commander Maguire (Great Britain, 1854, map facing p. 186), Royal Navy (RN). Thomas Simpson (1843, p. 152) named the stream "Bellevue" in expression of delight on seeing his goal, Point Barrow.
