HistoryRussian name meaning "east," published by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in 1898. Elliott (1881, St. Paul notes) reported the local name "Novastoshnah," meaning "of recent growth," so called because "this locality in pioneer days was an island to itself***." This name is derived from the Russian word "novyy" meaning "new."
