Pleasant Island lies in Icy Strait, 0.3 mi. SE of Gustavus and 44 miles west of Juneau.
In Grant Number: AKW-20 Project Number: 14.28 "Deciphering wolf diets in Southeast Alaska using stable isotope analyses and prey remains in scats" it was determined that wolves on the island feed primarily upon deer and sea otters. As the study continued the deer population plummeted and the pack learned to hunt sea otters as a main source of their diet.
Named in 1879 by W. H. Dall, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), because of its "pleasant shore." The name was published in the 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 203).
