HistorySo named "O(strov) Otmyloy," meaning "reef (or shoal) island" by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 7), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), because of a shoal extending off the island for nearly a mile. It was called "Shoals Island" in the 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 209).
