HistoryNamed "Estero del Ancau" by Captain Alessandro Malaspina, in 1791, after a Tlinkit Indian chief named Ancau (Galiano, 1802, map 8). According to dixon (1789, p. 172), "Ancau" means "chief" or "friend." Marcus Baker reversed the two names "Tawah" and "Ankau" in his Geographic Dictionary.
