HistoryPublished in 1853 on Russian Hydrographic Dept. Chart 1494 as "Proliv Chichagova" or "Chichagov Strait." Lieutenant Commander H. E. Nichols, U.S. Navy (USN), published the present name in 1891 Coast Pilot (p. 114). Name was probably given for the vessel Chichagov.
