HistoryNamed in 1869 by Commander R. W. Meade, U.S. Navy (USN), for Lieutenant Commander John Elliott Pillsbury, 1846-1919, U.S. Navy (USN), a member of his party. Pillsbury served one year in the Hydrographic Office and ten years in the Coast Survey Service. He was made rear admiral in 1908.
