History

Named in 1794 by Captain Vancouver (1798, v. 3, p. 292) for George, Earl Macartney, English Governor of the Windward Islands in the Caribbean and later Governor of Madras, India (Wagner, 1937, p. 395). It was discovered in 1794 by James Johnstone, a member of Captain Vancouver's party.
