HistoryAleut name published by Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 15, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), dated 1792) as "Zaliv Kul-lilyak" or "Kullilyak Bay." According to R. G. Geoghegan, this name was derived from the Aleut word "Kulilakc meaning "sorrow" or "grief."
