Named by prospectors for the two "half-breeds named Pitka and Sorresco" (Mertie, 1937, p. 5), who made the first discovery of gold on Birch Creek. The name was reported in 1908 by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) (Covert and Ellsworth, 1909, pl. 4).
