Named in 1886 by Lieutenant Commander R. Clover, U.S. Navy (USN), for "Captain Samuel Conrad Lemly, Judge Advocate Gerneal, U.S. Navy (USN)." The name was published erroneously as Lemley by Lieutenant Commander H. E. Nichols Survey, 1891, p. 106), U.S. Navy (USN).
