History

Named in 1882 by W. H. Dall, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) after Commander H.E. NIchols, U.S.N, who reconnoitered this region in 1881. Nearby are The Sentinels. Nichols called the entire group "Sentinel Islands" in 1881.
