HistoryNamed in 1898 by prospectors for the Alaska grayling, Thymallus signifer, a fresh water fish; reported by Oscar Rohn, of Captain W. R. Abercrombie's expedition in 1899. U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) published the present spelling in 1932.
