HistoryNamed by prospectors for Howard Franklin, prospector, who in 1886 "went up the Fortymile, where on September 7 he found gold in the river bars 25 miles from the mouth and a little later on Franklin Creek, a tributary of the main river" (Brooks, 1953, p. 328). The name was first reported in 1890 by E. H. Wells of the Leslie Expedition.
